The Henry Ford - Greenfield Village
One of the amazing parts of The Henry Ford is the outdoor Greenfield Village. Henry Ford moved or recreated more buildings than we could count. Buildings that were either formative in his life (his first school or the school where McGuffy went to school) or formative to our national history (a plantation, a brass factory)
We loved the detail of the bicycle store that the Wright Brothers designed their airplane. When Orville found out what Ford was doing he actually offered the store and his home to Ford. He was there for the dedication in the 40's.
If you remember from the last post Thomas Edison was an important part of making the Henry Ford. He was a good friend of Ford (they have mansions close to each other in Florida). He allowed Ford to move his Menlo Park facility to Dearborn as long as it was still on Jersey soil, so the top soil in the location of the lab was trucked here from Jersey.
Edison even convinced the woman who ran the boarding house for his workers to have her home moved to show how it all worked together with the first DC lines from the generator at his research center to her home.
We had the opportunity to ride many old forms of transportation: train, horse and carriage, Model A bus and these two highlights!
We enjoyed seeing all the history and even brought some history of our own. Sweet found some old post cards from her Great Aunt's collection from the 40's or 50's. Of the 4 we brought 3 of the places were still there!
Finally one of the first houses at the park was the Heinz home from Pittsburg, and we all know what's important about Heinz ;)

| Lots of work happened here. Arm chair was nailed to the floor after Edison sat in it for the last time. Note the organ in the back where they had music at lunch! |

We had the opportunity to make things. Gherkin used a leather drive lathe to make a candlestick and KimChee made a corn husk doll.
