Stories in Stone - Day 2

Off on another day exploring the Black Hills...
Today we started in the Badlands.
It is totally understandable how they got their name.
Challenging terrain on one side - beautiful prairie grass on the other.
It was amazing to see the lines in the hills indicating the different layers of soil laid down and compressed over millions of years.
Gherkin and KimChee participated in a ranger program talking about the different animals you find in the area. (Badge 1 for the Day)
Then we headed up to the Minuteman National Historic Site.  It was interesting to see the progression of the number of nuclear weapons between the two countries. (Badge 2)
 Obligatory stop at Wall Drug!
We went to the National Grasslands Visitors Center and learned a lot about the grasslands.
Hat Trick - Badge 3 for the day!!!
After dinner we headed into Rapid City.  They have statues of all the presidents up through the most recent Bush (Obama gets unveiled this fall).  Had we know how much fun it was going to be we would have brought a box of props!
Listening to Abe impart knowedge

With Benjamin Harrison
