We headed up to 6000 feet to enjoy an amazing unobstructed view of the stars at McDonald Observatory. There was more atmospheric disruption between us and the mountain 7 miles away than us and the stars!!!
We went up twice since they have both daytime and evening programs. During the day we toured two of the telescopes and got to see how the research was being done. Let me burst your bubble right now - it's not all looking at the pretty stars and seeing what's new. They spend hours looking over spectrograph analysis of the wavelengths produced by different heavenly bodies.

We went up again in the evening for their twilight educational program followed by the start party with tons of telescopes we could view with. It was the first night in their two week spring break program that it had been clear. I wish I had photos but well, it was dark and my camera wasn't cooperating. Honestly it's something you should experience for yourself!!! Get your
tickets ahead of time to reserve your spot at a start party since they do sell out!
While we are on the topic of miles we calculated the other day that we have driven 1/10 of the way to the moon. Here is our updated
map.
