Atomic City

In the middle of nowhere Idaho there stands the not quite ghost town of Atomic City.  They were built around the nuclear research facility.  At this point their claim to fame is their name and the race track.  Upon review it looked a bit like Thunder Hollow from Cars 3.

There wasn't much to see and the locals were getting a little nervous so we headed up the road a piece to:
The sign at the end of the road said it was closed for the season but we decided to at least drive by and see what the story was all about.  When we got there they had a school group going through so we just did a self-guided tour.
The guard shack reminded us of the one at Los Alamos
The building remains just as it was (excluding radioactive material) prior to the shut down of the facility in the late 60's.
Checking out all the analog readouts and logs
It would have been neat to see this all lit up!
The boys did their best mad scientist!
We were able to tour a lot more of the facility that we though possible.  The room where they managed the tubes was neat since they used mechanics from outside the room to do the work.  The protection in place was immense.
Count the layers of glass in that window!
To close out the day we made sure to get an Atomic Burger at the local diner!
